write error when using ipodpatcher
« on: December 05, 2008, 04:50:33 PM »
Hi All,

I'm trying to use ipodpatcher to install the bootloader but getting an error.
I ran a few passes of badblocks in read write mode on /dev/sda1 with no errors
so I suspect my drive is okay. Any ideas on what to try next?

Also, I'm able to read/write using dd with no errors.
I'm using firewire to connect.

Output follows.

Thanks for any pointers.

Steve

From iPodpatcher's output, it looks like you're trying to install on either a 1st or 2nd generation iPod. But which one do you have?

It's a second generation with a 10G drive.

Try updating the original firmware using iTunes - 1.5 is the latest for the 2G.

I'm not quite there yet, but it seems as if my problems were caused with the sbp2 module in linux which communicates with the ipod. I invoked it as 'modprobe -v sbp2 workarounds=0x1f' and things started working again.

Now I'm up to the point where I get a white screen on boot of rockbox but I'm able to install/uninstall the bootloader so its getting close.

I've also become pretty proficient at bringing the ipod up from nothing to a working state in under 5 minutes  :)
