My E280R died after Rockbox install
« on: December 03, 2008, 02:02:44 PM »
Guys, please help.
I followed this link
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaE200RInstallation

11.
"Safely remove" your Sansa, disconnect the USB cable and wait for it to reboot. It should refresh the database, then upgrade the firmware. After another reboot, you should be in Rockbox!

After 11th step, my E280 never reboot. It stuck on the welcome screen. My computer not recognizing the payer. I am not able to remove the Rockbox or access the payer from Windows Explorer.

Please help ..

What is the "welcome" screen? What happens when you try to shutdown and reboot, exactly?

Thank you for your reply.

screen with "Sandisk" word stays (First screen when you turn on the player). Not going to menu screen

Update: I tried to format my E280R in Recovery mode. It formatted, but when I trun on again. it gave me error
"load main image failed. Switch to recovery mode"

Is there any way I can see and delete the .rockbox and .mi4 files I copied during Rockbox firmware install on "Recovery mode"?

Only on Recovery mode, my E280R showing in my computer

Does your Sansa show up as a removable drive at all (in Windows)? Try a different USB cable, just to rule it out as a possible cause

You can find directions for recovery from the SansaFAQ page (on the wiki).

The Rockbox files aren't loaded unless the bootloader is there, and restoring the original firmware in Recovery mode deletes the bootloader.

Recovery mode says

Quote
Do not copy anything except one .mi4 file to the recovery partition.

This did not work on my sansa C240 I needed two files the firmware.mi4 file and the pribootLoader.rom

This may be true for the E series.

If it is then the unbrick document needs amending

That file probably shouldn't be necessary if you're trying to restore to the same firmware version you had previously.

I've had trouble getting Windows to 'see' my Sansas.  Here's what worked for me.

If you can get back to where you're able to boot the Sansa original firmware:

Go to 'Settings', 'USB Mode' and change the setting to "MSC" instead of "MTP"

Set to "MTP" windows should 'see' your Sansa.

Yes. Make a folder called, "Sansa.fmt" on the Sansa and allow the Sansa to reboot.
It will delete your Rockbox files and go back to factory default.

HOWEVER, if you don't have a good copy of the Original Firmware still on the player, it will just get stuck. You'd need to Manually Download and copy the CORRECT Firmware to that folder as well.

--The original firmware file is Supposed to be in the Sansa's System folder but if you do the above format then reboot then go back to recovery mode and drag the Firmware onto that partition, the Sansa will locate and copy it to the right spot.

And again, this is absolutely unnecessary because the original firmware is NOT stored on the data partition, and Rockbox is not loaded from the data partition if Rockbox's bootloader isn't installed to the firmware partition.

As well, the original firmware file is in the System folder for Rockbox to find it. In a non-Rockboxed Sansa, that file isn't normally present or needed.
