Hack: H120 with USB charge but....

I am new to rockbox and of course to this forum.

Lately I am using my iriver H120 only in my car but I got bored with having two different adapters one for power my iriver and other to power my cellphone.
And because my cell and many of the new generation gadgets come with a mini-USB plug to recharge them, I mod my old iriver to behave the same way.

The mod was pretty easy, just open the H120 and put a little cable from the 5V usb port to the + of the charger port. OF COURSE THIS NEEDS A LITTLE OF FINE SOLDERING EXPERIENCE.

After the mod was done, I works great the only problem is that every time that I plug it to recharge it, I goes into usb mode, so I can not use it until it finish the charging process and I unplug the adapter.

Reading this forum I found that if I activate the Screendump it would save a screenshot instead of going into the USB mode. This solution works fine for the moment, but I would like to know if anybody knows how to activate USB charge without going into USB mode.

I know this player does not have USB charge by default, but that is exactly the idea of this mod to give this feature to this old player.

I'm not sure if this applies to the H120, but with iPods you can hold the "menu" button while inserting the USB cable to cause Rockbox to just charge instead of rebooting to the USB mode.

Do some searching in the Wiki - the USB charging mod is a well known one and I expect the Wiki (or maybe posts here) will cover the USB mode issue.

I have been doing my search the screendump solution is the only solution that I could find up to now.

Holding a button while inserting the USB cable does not work with the H120, I guess it is just disabled because the H120 does not have USB charge. I tried every single button but it just goes into USB  mode.

Is this mod safe?  Earlier today I read in a different thread that the H140 may be damaged by under-rated chargers.

Totally safe. I've been using a boxwave sync+charge cable for years and it does electrically the same exact thing as this mod would do.



But there would be no way to choose between "disk mode + charge" and "rockbox + change" on the H1x0 player.

This would be a very welcome addition to the rockbox code, but there is little interest since it is very particular.
