ipod 5.5, scrollwheel response with recent builds...
« on: November 28, 2008, 09:19:18 PM »
Does anyone else have increased problems with the responsiveness of the scrollwheel on recent builds for the ipod 60/80? Right now I'm using r19246 but I've tried release 3.0 and many builds in between. It seems more prevalent on more recent revisions...

I assume you are seeing the difference while music is playing?
I also assume you mostly play MP3 music?

I assume this because the recent MP3 dual-core work means the CPU is infrequently boosted when playing MP3 files, and so the UI is always in the "sluggish" state, not the "perky" state when the CPU is boosted.

Yeah it's while music is playing. I'd say about 60% percent of my music files are .ogg but I'll keep an eye on what filetype is playing when/if problem occurs. It has been mentioned before (http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=17408.0) but I thought the UI was potentially 'sluggish' WHILE the CPU was boosted??

I find that list scrolling is sluggish when using the default WPS and font size with an unboosted CPU on my 5th gen iPod.
You can always go in to the debug menu and manually increase the boost count to force boost mode and see if it really is a problem of boosted vs unboosted.
I assume you have dir cache on?

dircache is off. I can live with 'sluggish,' it's 'completely unresponsive' that worries me. I'll try the manual boost via debug.

Turn on dircache for a start.
Report back after you test with boost kicked up.

Ok will do. Dircache seems to increase boot-time on the ipod, so I tend to leave it off. But I'll enable it and see what happens. The problem with my problem is that it's kinda random so my descriptions are unscientific to say the least. I've always noticed lag of course and occasional 'freezes' but I thought they seemed more frequent recently. How do I boost CPU by the way - is it in CPU frequency?

System -> Debug -> CPU Frequency -> roll the wheel to the left to increase "boost_counter" to some number greater than 1.

boost_counter at 2. When I enter that menu option the value changes between 0 and 3 all of itself. Is that normal?

Yes, various parts of Rockbox are requesting boosts then unboosts.

Yea, I should have said "at least one greater than what it is when you get there"
Set it for 100 and it will never unboost!  ;)

Yes, as the CPU is running at full speed.

I wasn't suggesting boost as a permanent solution - but rather as a test to see if list-scrolling issues go away for you.

I'm keeping an eye on it....

EDIT: CPU Frequency set at 3. Seems to sort things out. Battery dies faster of course. I can live with that. Happy Days
