click wheel or logic board?

Hello.

An idiot relative managed to pour coke all over my red wine audio ipod video. There was not much coke in the actual ipod, but the click wheel is unresponsive as is the centre button. None of the click wheel functions work. I've just stripped the ipod and rebuilt it for the umpteenth time. Everything is clean and should have worked.

Directly pressing the buttons on the logic board does naught. Not a thing  :'(

I guess Cokes secret formula strongly dissagrees with electronics. Anyway the imod conversion cost circa £250/ £300 (Sent twice to the states) so im quite keen to keep the logic board.

So what should I be replacing. The click wheel, the logic board
 or both?

I dont want to drop £50 on a new logic board only to discover the click wheel is defective..

 Help would be severely appreciated.

The click wheel is replaceable. this part and this part are what you need to fix the click wheel. You can try to replace the click wheel first to see what it does, and if it still doesn't work, then you may need to drop the money for a new logic board (one is here).

The moral of this story is as follows: Coke does kill electronics, and this is why I myself wouldn't let "idiot relatives" with 100 yards of my stuff. :)

While coke can kill electronics, it's possible it just left behind gunk.  I'd try to clean it, maybe first soaking and washing in distilled water, and then if that doesn't work, isopropyl alcohol.

I don't think a failed click wheel would make the buttons on the motherboard stop working, but I'm not certain of this.

This is probably well known by all reading this but I just wanted to mention that if you do decide to soak and subsequently let dry anything please do yourself a favor and disconnect the power source (battery) before doing so. Thanks and good night.  ;)
