what player for recording?

hello,

I have been using rockbox on my h120 very successfully for years now. my brother recently asked me what player he should buy - he mostly needs it to record (classical music, mostly violins...) any recommendations what new player is best for this purpose at the moment?
obviously i want him to be able to use rockbox on it, it needs to have an external mic input - it should be able to record  .wav files.

I suppose it doesn't need to be a 20gb hard disc recorder like my iriver as he does not basically plan to use it as a music player, and he says a couple of hours recording time would be enough...

unfortunately there are no new supported players that have line-in.
So the choice remains iriver h1x0/h3x0 or iaudio x5. They pop up on ebay from time to time

I'm hoping maybe a port for the iriver E100 gets started, it has line-in as well....

There's no way to even try to predict when Rockbox will run on any future player. Sometimes people work on them and stop suddenly. Sometimes we don't know about people working on them until someone shows up with an awful lot of work already done.

As well, these boards aren't really here for discussing the functionality and features of the original firmware.

I have no idea at all. Never been near an iaudio 7.

you might consider one of the old archos jukebox recorders.  they will record to .wav line in via the wav recording plugin.  I think eventually they will probably integrate it into the regular recording setup so it's as easy as a menu option.

the v1 jbr was fairly easily modded with a larger hard drive and better batteries, and the v2 was a step up but harder to mod the hard drive. (messy - soldering req'd)

both are fairly regularly up on ebay, and cheap!

Can anyone tell me if there are any practical reasons to go for an iRiver H1** over and H3** ? I fried my beloved H120 and am looking into replacements. H3**'s are cheaper on eBay. I don't want to get one, though, if the recording capabilities are limited in any way compared to the H1** which served me wonderfully for years.

The H300 series don't have the optical input/output. I believe that's the only significant difference.

Some (5g at least) iPods have a line in in the dock connector. You will need to buy/make an adapter.

I don't agree with the flush buttons. The front buttons of the h300 are hard to press by accident, the h100 joystick on the other hand is easily bumped into.

I'm sorry, but 'stealth' recording is just another form of Copyright Infringement. If you need to hide your recorder, you aren't supposed to be doing it.

well, I sometimes have to do my recording 'stealth' because the owner of the venue doesn't like recording even if I have an agreement with the artist that I can record the shows.

And if I would do a (stealth) recording of another show and only use it for personal listening, I see that as making a copy of my own CD for backup / ease of use purposes, not copyright infringement.

What you are talking about is bootlegging: recording a show and selling it. The whole 'taping' community is against that. If they find out on taperssection.com that you're bootlegger, I bet they ban you for life.

As petur has already noted, this is not true.  I often record my own performances, but hide the recorder simply because, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, it's not something that I want the audience to see.  It's the same reason that we route microphone cables on stage to be as inconspicuous as possible.
