In your case, as you have an e200r you can't install the bootloader using Rockbox Utility. This is listed as open issue on its wiki page ... you need to use e200rpatcher instead.

And Rockbox Utility is not "the only way to install", nor does the mentioned page say that.

You are right about the open issue about rbutil. I saw it and I tried not to use rbutil. I then found specific instructions for the Rhapsody Sansa and used those to succesfully load the bootloader using e200patcher, which then told me to go to Step 2.
So then (I am still following the instructions specific for a Rhapsody Sansa) and it links me to a page via "here"  where I am supposed to find a Rockbox (installation?) zipfile, unzip it to the root of my device, reboot and  I should be on my way. However the "here" link puts me on a page of the Rb Utility, which supposedly makes it easier way to install.  The page did not show a "more difficult" (?) way of downloading the zip file.

I just checked the "SansaE200RInstallationFromWindows" wiki page, and clicked the "here" link and it did not link me to rbutility.  It linked me to http://build.rockbox.org/, from which I can select the e200 zip.

Yes the link"here" does lead to http://build.rockbox.org/ but there it says "for a stable build get Rockbox 3.0" and when you follow that link it will put you to the Rb Utility page.

Edit: Wait, I see a Sansa player picture lower on the "build" page. I am going to try and see if that will get me anywhere...

Second Edit: Something must have gone wrong with the unzip because I end up with hundreds of little files in the root and no "Rockbox" directory as is mentoined in the Manual. When booting the player it shows the Rockbox logo and then a msg "no Rockbox directory". So that seems consistent.
Could I just fix this by manually creating the root directory and moving all the little files into that directory?  The answer is NO, as I later found out.

Edit3: I had used a new unfamiliar unzip program and had not noticed a selection option to include sub directories. So, I manually cleaned the Sansa root directory (except files Version.txt and version.sdk which were there originally), unzipped Rockbox.zip again into the Root and after a few reboots and database initialization the player is actually playing songs in Rockbox!!

Now I am going to checkout the "Shuffle" option. This is the main reason I wanted Rockbox because the original Shuffle in the  e200 is horrible. You never seem to hit 75% of the music stored in the player. Even when using the pause and resume functions.

This is still wrong -- this page is similar to the main download page, and you can download the build for every player. But anyway, for installing Rockbox itself you can use Rockbox Utility -- just not for the bootloader, and you can't use the "Quick Start" tab. If you select your player manually (and choose the e200), then use the Installation tab and the Install Rockbox button. This will only install the main build, and it will allow you choosing between the latest release and the most recent build.

Thank you for helping.

You are so right.  Now that I know it, it seems so obvious ::).  But when I saw the Sansa picture on that page with below it the underlined words "PDF Manual" and "English Language" I thought I already have the manual and selected the link "use Utility for easy installing".  Anyway, as you maybe saw, I stumbled through it and am listening to my player right at this moment while reading the Manual.
