Questions about 30G video upgrades

(1/1)

NamantH:
I have been searching for a bit now and am not seeing the answers I want, so I figured I would ask.

I originally started with an ipod classic 160, after reading I couldnt use it.. i went out and got me a 30 video.  I just got done installing rockbox, and i absolutely love it...

The questions.

I want to increase the size of the drive.  I would love to try to track down one of the newer 240 toshiba drives that are 8mm, but th back is a 5mm.  If I got a replacement housing, will the guts of the 30 fit the 60 or 80 which had the 8mm drives?

I understand that the drive will be too small till i get the larger drive, and im ok with that.

I am seeing 850mah+ batts on ebay.  they are saying that they are for the 60/80, which has the larger housing.  if the above is true, when I swap out the guts, will the new battery fit as well?

Thats it for now.

Thanks to everyone that made this software possible.  I love it...  Gonna end up just letting my 160 go after I get this monster built, if it all works.

TPC:
You'll have to choose one of the two, either a thick disk (8mm) or a thick battery.  I don't think the larger backing on the 60/80 models will accommodate both.  80GB 5mm drives exist, you can find them in the 80GB Ipod Classic, or from random stores around the internet.

Also, large drives (> 137GB) will probably need a version of Rockbox with LBA48 addressing enabled.  This involves recompiling.  Fortunately recompiling isn't that hard to do.  I remember reading something about how new versions of RB already support LBA48 but I'm not completely sure about that, check out the wiki and the release notes.

Another thing, when using larger drives, you may have the same problem some of the rest of us were having after upgrading our 30GB video to something larger, it has to do with funky sector sizes on the hard disk.  I came up with a solution that worked for me, it might work for you too if you run into trouble.

The guts of a 30GB model will fit in a 60/80GB housing.  I think the only things that are different sizes are the HDD, battery, backplate, and possibly (I'd have to check - don't have 'em on me) the hold switch/earphone jack assembly.

The batteries are advertised as being for 60GB/80GB ipods.  The 60/80GB disks are 8mm.  I don't see why they would advertise a battery for 60/80GB iPods if it doesn't fit.

I plan on doing this over time, so as it is worked on i will post up progress :)
