Firmware Won't Upgrade
« on: November 24, 2008, 09:43:46 PM »
My 120 currently has 1.66E on it. I'm trying to put Rockbox on. I downloaded 1.66US, patched it, stuck it in the root, disconnected the USB, and attempted to upgrade the firmware. When it asks "Are you sure?' I select yes. The dialogue closes and I'm back in the general settings window. Absolutely nothing happens. I tried a few other unpatched versions of the firmware and it does the same thing. Am I doing something wrong here or is there problem with the 1.66E firmware that it won't let you upgrade? Anyone? Thank you.

Hmmm, 1.66 should work fine as far as I know, but I think the player should turn off when the firmware upgrade is complete (it is a long long time since I last flashed my H140).

Does it let you go to 1.65?

Bizarre.  If it won't do anything with an unpatched firmware, then it sounds like you are out of luck.  Perhaps iriver can help (I know, a long shot).

EXACTLY the same thing is happening to me today while trying to install rockbox.

H140, existing firmware of 1.66u

First I tried a patched rockbox 1.66 hex file and after clicking YES to upgrade firmware, the player sits there and does nothing.

I powercycled the player and tried again with no success, then I hit the reset button and tried again, same thing....

Next, downloaded clean 1.63 firmware (I think it was) and tried to flash with that and same thing (doesn't flash)

No other firmware file is on the device.

So now I'm sitting here wondering if I might try tossing the H140 up and shooting it with a 12guage... i suck at trap shooting though so may break the player when it hits the ground..

Any ideas?  I think I'll next try to remove the battery from the device for a minute or so, then put it back in and start over.... how do I remove the battery though?  haha

Thank you!

What is the exact name of the hex file you are trying to flash?  I haven't flashed my H120 in a while, but I recall that the iriver firmware is very picky about the name of the file, and the file name as downloaded from iriver is not always necessarily what the player expects to see.

you know... I was wondering exactly that, but forgot to follow up with the idea

ihp_120-1.66-US.hex  is the name of the file I am trying to flash with.

--------------edit

Yep, that was it.

rename the ihp_120-166.US.hex   to    ihp_120.hex     and you'll be good to go.

....now I have a new problem - player comes up with the following after turning on:

Rockbox boot loader
Version 6
Batt: 4.19v

Off to research that message.  Thanks!

-------------

so it looks like I need to make the partition a primary partition?  and in order to do that I'd have to reformat it and all that jazz?

Well, you need to make a primary partition and i don't think any formating tools can convert a logical one into a primary one so you'll need to delete your current partition and create a new primary one and then format that.
Edit: assuming that you have a logical partition currently and that this is your problem, the question was not entirely clear.

yeah, logical partition..

Will the old FDisk and Format tools work?  Thought I read somewhere that I'd have to do something special to get the entire 40gb viewable.. can't find the information though.

Yes, later versions of windows has a n artificial limitation on the size of FAT partitions in can create. So you may need to use alternative software, such as http://www.compuapps.com/Download/swissknife/swissknife.htm this. Make sure you format it as FAT32.

As an alternative, if you can boot the original firmware, I believe that it has its own format function.

I should note, however, that re-flashing the iriver firmware shouldn't do anything to your disk partition or anything else that would require you to reformat the player.  Is the message that you posted the entire message that you receive when you try to boot the player?
