White screen after installing on 2nd gen iPod
« on: November 24, 2008, 07:21:08 AM »
I decided to try out Rockbox for its OGG and FLAC support with my 2nd gen iPod. Anyway, I've tried both manual install and automatic install, with the same result.

When installing the rockbox bootloader, the iPodpatcher program seems to work just fine:

[INFO] Scanning disk devices...

Press ENTER to exit ipodpatcher :

I've successfully unzipped the rockbox firmware as well (the .rockbox folder in the root of my iPod is there).

However, when I disconnect and reset the ipod (menu + play), the apple logo appears for a few seconds, then the screen goes completely black (or white if i touch the wheel -- the backlight turns on)

I can still put the ipod in disk mode perfectly fine (menu + play, then rew + ff), and I can boot into the original Apple firmware (menu + play, then hold menu), so I'm at a loss for what the problem is.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

I've never seen that behavior, but you could try a restore from iTunes, then re-install the bootloader and Rockbox.

Can you tell us what version of Rockbox you installed?

The newest version, 3.0.

Why was this moved? I'm yet to successfully boot the Rockbox firmware.

It could have stayed, I guess.  It just seems less like an installation problem than some problem with the build, itself.  I.e. you successfully installed the bootloader and it seems the build was extracted correctly (though it may be corrupted).  Can you try with a current build and see if you have the same problem?

This may be a longshot but try creating a file named "config.cfg" inside the .rockbox dir on your ipod.
Inside that file, put a line like this "contrast: 63" try starting it again, this sets max contrast which may be too dark even so if the display is now too dark, set a lower value.

edit: a way to see if rockbox is working at all would be to install a voicefile http://www.rockbox.org/daily.shtml and listen for voice feedback.

Scren boots to white, backlight goe out. touch whell and backlight turns on. Nothing else.

It looks like the server just came back recently.  You can try getting a voice file again.

It seems like a bug report is in order too.

You might want to try an old build. My second gen is running currently with r18892 fron Oct 26 2008, with contrast = 44.

I'll try a recent build and see if it suffers in the same way described above.

Edit:
The problem doesnt appear to be build related. Mine is still working fine with R19360, a build from Dec 7 2008. I also removed the bootloader, and re-installed the current boot loader using Rockbox util - the iPod still works fine.

If we can find out what differs between your situations then this will be of use to the developers.

I've spotted a difference in behaviour when using the old (v2) bootloader and the current one, but in my case it shows up when booting into the OF, and does NOT affect the contrast when booting into Rockbox. With the V2 bootloader, the OF contrast is good, but with the new bootloader I can hardly read the OF display (until I adjust the contrast).

Edit:  The old bootloader can be found here :

I have the same problem on my 2nd gen ipod. something's screwing with the contrast. I can however read the screens of the original firmware if I tilt the ipod a bit or just turn on the backlight.

I can navigate to the contrast settings and try to set them there, but this doesnt really work, as if the OF is interpreting and adjusting the contrast wrong.

Actually it looks a bit like a burnt out old TV, but in rockbox the screen is just fine and dandy.

Also, it doesnt happen all the time. It's kind of hard to tell how this happens, but when I do find out, I'll let you know. Dunno the exact build I'm using, startup screen sez version 3.3.
