Operation while plugged in
« on: November 22, 2008, 02:58:56 PM »
I have a Sansa e280 w/ released 3.0.  It's generally hanging in my kitchen hooked up to a pair of computer speakers so we can have tunes there.  I'd like to leave it plugged in all the time so I don't have to worry about battery SOC.

However, it won't turn off while plugged in.  Finally after 15 seconds of holding the power button it shuts down ungracefully.  Is this intended function?

The player not shutting down with power attached is an intended function.

Why?  It's not charging the battery.  It's just plugged in.  What's the difference?

As far as I know the hardware doesn't actually allow shutting down with the cable plugged in

Another reason is to not shut it down as you wouldn't like that when attaching the player to your car ...

The OE firmware allows that, after the battery is fully charged.

What is the possibility of making this a configurable option?

Assuming its physically possible, and someone actually came up with a reason to have it, probably not too bad.

It should be physically possible, it is with the OE firmware.  Pressing the power button takes you to a charging screen, then shuts down when the battery is charged.  Since Rockbox reports 100% battery power when plugged in (and doesn't support the charger) there should be another way to access this shutdown routine.

I came up with a reason.  I want to be able to access the normal shutdown routine while plugged in.  My setup is similar to a docking station, just cheaper, an AC powered USB port with the provided cable.

The fact that Rockbox doesn't access the on board battery charger in this case actually helps me.  Leaving it plugged in for a couple of years won't slow cook my battery like it did with my iPod.
