Best/most available rockboxable player?

Well, someone "borrowed" my iPod, so I'm in the market for a new rockboxable player.

I need at least 8GiB of space, but I don't mind hacking the thing open to replace the drive.

My main concerns are battery life (which sucked on the 4G iPod) and availability.

Too bad about that "In Production" column.    I'm not interested in coding the stuff myself, I'm afraid, but I'll throw money at people who are if someone's close.

I'd think the more obvious solution is to buy second-hand.
