Bad sector scan feature
« on: November 20, 2008, 08:09:56 AM »
I'm having problems reading in files from my iriver H140, possibly due to bad sectors. I would like a feature within Rockbox to scan the hard drive and flag any bad sectors.  Would this be possible?

Not related to Rockbox but is there any windows based utility which can scan and flag bad sectors (run in windows not DOS based) As I can leave it scanning whilst gaming or doing other Windows stuff.

I'm sure it's possible, but 'someone' would have to implement it and I can't see there being much support for such a thing when every single computer OS has a range of tools for doing exactly that both quicker and with a better interface than you could ever hope for doing it using the device's firmware.

...and for a Windows utility, run chkdsk (do a forum search first). This can done within a window from Start > Run... > cmd

Find your player in Windows Explorer.  Right click on it and navigate to Properties --> Tools --> Error checking/check now.  Check both boxes in the dialog box.

Problem with that it runs in DOS mode, so the computer cannot be used, and 40GB will take a while to do a scan. Much easier if iriver does it by itself, just leave it plugged into charger during the scan.

No, your computer can be used just fine whilst running a scan on any drive except the boot drive (i.e. your C drive).

This is a NoDo.  It's going to take longer on the  DAP, and it's going to completely kill your battery, so yes the only time you would ever use it is if you have access to a power point, which means you probably also have access to a computer.
