Sansa e250 and games
« on: November 18, 2008, 01:22:10 PM »
Hi:

New user.  Loaded the latest rockbox onto my sansa e250.  Everything works great.

Question - should I be hearing sound from the standard games, or from the pacman mame distribution?  I noticed that any time I attempt to stop a song using the power button the wps shows the song as "paused".  I'm wondering if this is the reason that I don't hear sound coming from games (no sound while a song is in progress, or paused)?  Or, maybe there is no game sound supported.

Sorry - I searched but couldn't find a discussion.  If there is one I apologize in advance.

Thanks for the help.

Most of the games don't have sound.  Doom has sound effects, but no music.  In many cases I like that as I can continue listening to music without any interruption.  I can even let my daughter play a game while I listen to music!

I'm not sure why your Sansa pauses when you tell it to stop, though.

Thanks for the quick response.  It's a gift for my kid, so I wanted to be able to tell him that this is the way it's supposed to be...  you know how persistent kids can be... :)

Yeah, I thought that was strange as well.  The manual clearly indicates that "stop" and "pause" are different features for this device.  However, the play/pause key and the power button both yield a "pause", and after either I get a "resume" option in the preceding menu.  I thought maybe I needed a long hold on the power button, but that just shuts the device down...

Maybe I have some weird firmware.

What version/revision of Rockbox do you have installed?

I used the auto installer and it installed r19135-081118 on my device.

Thanks again for the help!

You can still "resume" from a Stop

The difference between a stop and a pause is more noticeable on disk-based players, where "Pause" leaves all the music in memory (so the disk doesn't need to be spun for a resume) where Stop empties memory (which can be necessary to launch plugins that need more memory than is normally saved for them). Since there's no disk to spin, there's no real disadvantage to stopping on the e200 compared to disk-based players, and you'll only really notice a difference if you pause and then try to do one of the few things that require more memory (and they should tell you when you encounter such a situation).

OK, thank you for the clarification.

Interestingly, the wps shows a traditional "pause" icon (two vertical blocks) when I do a pause or a stop here.  I'd expect to see a solid square when I'm stopped and two vertical blocks when I'm paused.  I tried a number of skins and every one behaved the same.  So, both the power button and the play/pause button seem to look like a pause on the e250 in the current build, at least for me.

No worries - I know know the truth with respect to game sound, which is what I was after.  Thank you.

You can't be in the WPS while music is actually stopped.
