Database Update on sansa e270

It might just be a matter of me not understanding how it's supposed to work, but the db update is acting a bit strange. I had ~500 songs on my SD card and 0 on the sansa. I then removed the card altogether and added about 1100 songs directly to the sansa by connecting the sansa directly to the USB port and copying them through windows explorer.

I have auto-update turned on. When I started the sansa, it briefly showed "database not ready" then went to the main menu. When I went into database, i saw all of the old files, none of the new files.

I went through the menu to do a manual db update. After this I couldn't get into the database at all. It said something like "database updating, 1120 found, click "back" to cancel". I left it sit for a looooong time (about 45 minutes or so) and tried it again. It still said the same thing. Eventually I gave up and turned it off (the battery was almost dead anyway). When I turned it back on, it let me into the database and all of the old files were gone and the new ones were visible. I have not confirmed that ALL 1120 of them are there ,but it looks like it.

FYI - I have it set to load the db to RAM (not sure if this matters, but thought maybe i overloaded the RAM?). This is the first time I've used RB, and I downloaded the "current build" just yesterday, so I assume I'm on the latest and greatest.

On a side note - I've barely scratched the surface, but i LOVE this firmware. Nice work to all involved!

Rockbox does any database updating "in the background" while letting you use the player.

You have to reboot it(turn it off then on) for the new database to load. It will say "Committing database #/9" when you turn it on after it's been updated.

"Committing" is for when you've initialized a database, not for every database update.

Is there any advantage in 'updating' instead of 'initializing' ??

Most people would consider "it doesn't require a reboot" an advantage on its own..

if your database is being screwy...
i suggest you re-initialize it rather than just update it.
that usually works for me.

haha I was never paying attention so didn't notice that it refreshes w/out the reboot.
