[feature request]: paralel recording and playback

is it possible to make the "recording during playback" option? recording a separate audio track while playing the playlist content?

there are three reasons to create such feature.

- home-recording (like some field recorders do) for later mixing
- karaoke singing/recording for later mixing
- in research (my area): session recording (when you listen to some relaxation sounds and record your impressions).

for the research goals - it doesn't need to work with all audio and codecs formats, since some consume more processor (recording can be limited to 22kHz mono, base audio formats like mp3 or musepack).

would someone reconsider it seriously?

here is how i see it :

a simple 2 tracks recorder.
track #1 : left channel
track #2 : right channel

track #2 source : internal mic / line in
track # 1 source : an existing audio file

playback : only track #1 or both track if possible.

i'm a singer, I love my iRiver H140 + Rockbox, and I often need to take (vocal) notes over existing music tracks.

This was discussed a while back http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=11734.0(and before that) - apparently it is technically possible, particularly on the iRiver. The first two big catches are;

A) does the current software architecture of Rockbox permit it (I seem to remember a comment from someone I would generally believe to know what they are talking about saying not)

B) is there someone with the interest and skill to implement it (for reference I have neither)

This is possible already. Simultaneous playback and recording is not needed for these two functions. Currently you have to record the two tracks (left and right channel) simultaneously. I guess that independent recording of left and right channel into already existing uncompressed WAV will not be very difficult to implement but will it be usable without simultaneous playback?

For independent single channel playback see: Settings > Sound Settings > Channel Configuration

Did you have a look to plugin source code ?
i did some C a long time ago ... maybe i could find time to try ...

thanks too. :)  i was aware about managing recording channels.

in conclusion, it might be possible, but we need to try.
