Scramling 1G & 2G
AlexP:
Thanks for clearing up the confusion, Llorean has nicely explained why it is important. As a further note, referencing wikipedia proves nothing as due to its nature it is inherently unreliable. Useful for getting an overview, but not much else.

Okay then. Didin't mean to confuse the situation.
The models are:
Classic (1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 4G (color/photo), 5G, 6G)
Mini (1G, 2G)
Nano (1G, 2G, 3G, 4G)
Shuffle (1G, 2G)
Touch (1G, 2G)
though no? With their respective generations...
Llorean:
When iPod initially released the 6G it was released as the "iPod Classic" (note capitalization and use of Classic as part of a proper noun).
They later came back and said "We'll be referring to the original form factor as the classic line" (note lowercase, use as an adjective). This was a later decision they made, and announced at a separate time. People have taken this to mean "All previous iPods should be called the Classic model" but in reality, it's just the normal use of "classic" in English as a way to distinguish that form factor's line compared to the other form factors. So "the classic 1G iPod" would denote the 1st generation of iPods ever, while "the iPod 1G Classic" will promote significant confusion as to whether you mean the first iPod, or the first iPod of the new iPod Classic models (the 80/160GB versions as opposed to the newer 120GB versions). Since the first one isn't strictly clear either, we ask people to avoid calling anything but the 6G the "Classic" (to be noted: the 120GB is, as far as I know, still a 6G, swapping the hard disk is not a generational change).
This is where the confusion comes in. The form factor is "classic" but the proper noun name for the 6G iPod is the "iPod Classic" much like the 4G with colour screens were called "iPod Color" and "iPod Photo".
For the purposes of this forum, the iPod Classic when used as a proper noun is the 6G, but you should simply call earlier iPods "the 1G iPod" etc.

Okay, that's that then. I'll abide by this next time.
