Rockbox for Kids (e200)
« on: November 10, 2008, 11:03:29 PM »
So I have a 3-yr and 4-yr old, I plan on giving them a few Sansa e200s for Christmas.
(The left channel doesn't work- unrepairable, I'll convert some cartoons into mono and copy some fun music..)

I'd love to edit the menus so there are less options, so they could actually navigate them without messing up the players. I'm NOT a programmer- how would I go about changing the main menu to just the basics?

Thanks-

You can't without being a programmer.

As an OK workaround, however, you could set the player up how you want it, then save the complete config ([Main Menu] > Settings > Manage Settings > Save .cfg file), then go into the .rockbox folder and change the filename (config##.cfg) to fixed.cfg.

This will cause Rockbox to start-up with the exact same configuration every time it boots. So even if the kids screw it up completely, shutting the Sansa down and restarting will return it to normal.

Thank you both!

Maybe they'll both grow up in the next month and a half- we'll see how it all works out.

One thing to very careful with is volume. You don't want to damage their ears. If you're converting movies anyway, maybe reduce their volume at the same time so max volume is not too high?

Good point- one I've already got covered:

Since both players are broken (left channel doesn't work and is unrepairable (by me),) I'm just cutting a pair of non-powered speakers in half and splicing a plug onto the other one. They dont' wear headphones anyway, and these speakers (even pushed right up against the ear) aren't deafeningly loud.
-Actually they're still soft enough they won't drive mom and dad crazy.  ;)

I normally wouldn't consider giving kids anything that breaks upon dropping, but they LOVE watching their own little personal video screen, and I bought several players off ebay for $25- one just had software issues and I figured since the older son is getting one, why not put the others to use, too?

(And yes, the 9yr old is going to be getting the "fixed config" thing noted above..)

In fact, check this out- our family of mp3 players. I've spent way too much money on Sansas (and covers!) since I discovered them Nov '07:
