Obscenely slow Rockboxed iPod 5.5

When I run Rockbox on my 80gb iPod 5.5, it is SO slow when playing music.  It is slow to the point where navigating out of the now playing screen to the database (one click) takes between 30 seconds and a minute.  If I want to pause the song, it will take up to a minute or two.  When music is paused, it runs at a reasonable speed.

What's weird is that it was running at a respectable speed for about a month prior to that.  I didn't change any settings or the theme or anything.

Ok, and what did you do before not changing any settings?

Seriously, check the dircache settings and if the database is loaded to RAM. Also, check if this slowness is specific for some files or if it's a general issue.

Calexico:
The databases is loaded to RAM and it is slow for all files.  Should direct cache be on or not?  It is off for me.

Firstly, please specify which revision you're running.

Secondly, how many sound settings. (things like crossfeed, crossfade, Eq) settings have you played with?

Try resetting everything back to default and see if this improves things.
