Voice Issues (Was Re: Rockbox 3.0 Release Upgrade)
« on: October 30, 2008, 10:57:32 AM »
I have read the Rockbox 3.0 Release Upgrade thread a couple of times to try and resolve a problem I have, but I am still slightly confused.

On my Nano, I have been running release 18310 from 18 August 08.  I didn't see that 3.0 had been released and just went ahead and installed the latest build over the existing files as I do from time to time (r18919).  I also downloaded and installed the english voice file that went with it (ipodnano-20081029-english.zip)

Everything worked fine on the Nano, except that I found that voicing of menus and files had stopped working.  On looking again at the site, I saw that V3.0 had been released.

I assumed that I had to load this before the latest build could be installed, so I ran the Rockbox Utility.  Voicing still didn't work!

So I reinstalled 18310 and voicing returned.

So - did I do wrong just to install the latest build over my existing installation?  And does running the Utility not just overwrite that with the v3.0?

Hope you can see why I am confused!  (And can anyone tell me step by step how to upgrade from r18310 and still have working voicing? - I would much appreciate it!)

You don't need to do anything special to install post-3.0 builds, they're installed just like all others.

Are you sure the right voice file actually ended up extracted on your player?

Thanks Llorean for your post - I am pretty sure I used the voice file that was linked to the release, but I will have another go.  I will post an update here when done.

But before I do, can you just clarify - your post states "You don't need to do anything special to install post-3.0 builds".  I may be being dense, but does this mean that as r18310 is PRE 3.0, do I need to load 3.0 first before then updating in the usual way?  Or can I just overwrite 18310 with the latest build?

Thanks for the clarification.  I can report that I have successfully updated from r18310 to Rockbox 3.0 (plus voice file) by overwriting.  The voicing is now working.

I will leave it a while before I go again with a current build.  (Can only assume that maybe I didn't unzip the voice file correctly :-\ )
