Set sleep timer on as default
« on: October 29, 2008, 11:01:20 AM »
Hey guys

Please could we have an option where the sleep timer is on as default at startup.

I see a menu option where you can turn the sleep timer on and off to be active at startup and set the default time at which to turn off.

many people listen to audiobooks at night and set the sleep timer as current functionality. However may wake up in the middle of the night for a bathroom trip, drink etc... and may resume listening to rockbox...

It would be great to know we have the option to just turn it on (single button press, as we have resume on start active) without having to go through the system menu, sleep timer menu, set the timer, and back to now playing... when we're half asleep....

With the option to have the sleep timer on and counting down by default at startup, all we need to do is turn on and listen with the knowledge that it'll turn itself off.... rather than the current case of being half asleep, forgetting and have the rockbox playing for several hours while we're asleep, an un-nessecary drain on the battery...

Should be a simple update, however probably very useful to many users....

Thanks

I'd find this pretty annoying myself - I don't want my player switching itself off in the middle of the day when I'm using it.

Why not set up a discrete config file for this that you can run when you turn your DAP on ?

Nah, this is additional functionality that you can turn on or off.

When turned off, rockbox behaves as it does now, the sleep timer works the same.

When turn the functionality on, it will auto power off after the specified time without user intervention.

Your player would only switch off if you have activated the auto off setting.

make sense ?

You could set the sleep timer state in a fixed.cfg.  Then you just need to remember to override it in the cases that you don't want it to turn off, such as during the day.  This way, each time you turn on your player it will automatically set the sleep timer (and resume playback if you like).  You can easily just load another .cfg to turn off the sleep timer.  This doesn't seem any less convenient than having to hunt through menus each time you want to change the behavior.

the sleep time is not linked to the usual config settings at all... you cannot set it from a .cfg.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

As my girlfriend wants to have this option too, I would like to have at least the way that is shown here.

So please put the sleep timer option into the .cfg!

I have a more usefull (for me) behavior request that might offer similar functionality.   I can't believe there isn't an option for this already.  My goal is to have the device power off after x minutes if no buttons are pressed, regardless of playback status.

That way I can save my battery even if i forget to turn off the device when playing music. (for example in the car on battery power)

Just add another optoin to the menu right under  'idle power off', call it  'idle power off while playing' where you can specify a separate time value.

If i had this option, I could set this value to a high number, for me one hour would work fine, and not have to find my rockbox mysteriously dead from time to time when i forget to turn it off.   It wouldn't even affect my normal operation, really, how often do you listen for over an hour without pressing a button to skip, change vol, etc.    Like a battery safety net.

I would have this setting with options similar to the existing idle poweroff,  but I would go from OFF all the way up to 2 hours vs. max of 60 minutes.  I would have it actually pause playback then have the regular idle timer kick in to power off.  This would give users time to resume if they are actually still listening.  thus it would require the regular idle poweroff to be set.

please somebody implement this!!   it could be set to disabled by default so as not to affect those who like to listen for hours without touching their device.

This could even would work for the original poster without using a sleep timer at all,  he could set this timer to say 30 min and then when he falls asleep it turns off,  then if he wakes up and powers on, he resumes playback and gets his 30 minute timer automatically started counting.

fyi my device does not have the headphone detection ability, which would help at least some of the time if the device was unplugged from the headphones.

Thanks

You could turn off "repeat" so that when your playlist ends your player idle powers off.

This is not directly related to the feature request, however...

It appears (from the limited testing that I have done) that when the player is turned off by the timer, no bookmark is set.  Thus, even if the "Bookmark on Stop" is set to Yes or "Yes - Recent Only", that does not apply to the player being stopped as a result of the sleep timer.

Should it work that way or should a bookmark also be set if the player is turned off by the sleep timer.  Is that a bug, feature request or none of the above.

If a bookmark should be set if the "Bookmark on Stop" is set to "Yes..." however if it is set to "Ask..." I can see room for a question on the proper behavior.

You may have a look at FS#11042 - this version fits to all my (and my girlfriends) needs regarding a sleep timer.
Hope there are no annoying bugs left. A feedback would be very nice!
