Unfortunately it very much is with me, but would it be at all possible to get a 100GB+ Rockbox player with any of the current technology out there (technology meaning both MP3 players and Hard Drives).

I see Toshiba have released a 240GB 1.8" Drive (link: http://www.toshibastorage.com/main.aspx?Path=StorageSolutions/1.8-inchHardDiskDrives/MKxx31GAxSeries) and I would looove to get this in a pocketable device with rockbox on it.

Is this AT ALL possible and what kind of price do you think I'd be looking at? Ideally I'd like it on a player with good quality hardware, something like the iRiver H3XX would be fine.

Seems the MP3 player manufacturers are just concentrating on the shiny gimmicky devices these days. I've been waiting about 4/5 years to upgrade from my H140 and I think I'm just going to have to improvise :(

There are quite a few threads on this already, and some info in the wiki.

See www.rockbox.org/wiki/HardDriveReplacement to see what type of drives which DAPs already use.  New drives tend to be ZIF (LIF) or CE-ATA, whilst most of the Rockbox players use PATA.  You will want to use a ZIF drive, plus a converter if required:

http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/ZIFToATAAdapter

Various people have already done this.  For price, add together the price of the drive, plus the price of the adaptor, plus the price of the MP3 player.  I bought a Toshiba MK1214GAH (120 GB ZIF) for about 90 euros a good while ago now.

P.S.  Also pay attention to drive thickness.

Thanks for the reply :)

So going by the page you linked to, the 240GB toshiba drive is 8mm and so is the drive in the H340 and Ipod Video 80GB. So would all I need then be the 240GB Drive, an iPod Video or H340 and then an adapter?

Do you know is there anyone around these forums who puts these players together and sells them as a package as I wouldn't be confident at all with replacing a drive like that.

So as long all the above was done, rockbox will have no trouble recognising a 240GB iPod Video or H340? That would be so cool!

EDIT: WAIT!! Looking at the page again, it seems the iPod Video 60/80GB actually already use ZIF40, the same as the 240GB Toshiba, so would this just be a simple drive swap? Now where can I get my hands on a 240GB HD I wonder? :)

EDIT2: Ok, so looks like the Gigabet 60 and the Ipod Video are my best bets.

AlexP:
Theoretically yes.  You would need to compile Rockbox with large drive support for drives over 137 GB, but other than that, there shouldn't be an issue.

Note that as the 240 GB drive is announced but not released, so nobody has tried this particular drive.  Therefore no guaranties.  However, swapping a drive in general has been done by many.  I have a 120 GB drive (ZIF) in my gigabeat S60, and a 60 GB drive (PATA) in my gigabeat F40.  I personally haven't tried using an adaptor, but others have.

I just rang up span.com I think it was as they had the 240 drive on their site and they said it's been "announced" so it could be in stock any time from 1-6 months which is quite a while but I've waited for a long time anyway to update so I can wait another little while I'm sure. They said they wont know their price until about a month before they get it and said it will definitely be over £100, which isn't too bad, but hopefully not too much more than that :)

I use it mainly in my van, I don't know much about the gigabet, the ipod is nice and slick and afaik the sound quality has been improved, but driving, I think the clickwheel could be a bit of a pain!

Would compiling rockbox be a problem and could anyone who can post a thread in a forum do it? As in, without knowing my tech background, do you reckon I could? :) I've rockbox on my H140 so I managed to do that much :)
