Is my iPod a Classic or a Video ?
« on: October 28, 2008, 05:29:55 AM »
Hi everyone.

First of all, please excuse me for my english. I'm french, and i'm not pretty good in english so ...

I've an iPod, and I can't install RockBox on it.
Looking on the settings of my iPod, i see that the model version is "MB029".
It's a 80G Video iPod 5.5G, but it seems that it can't work with it.

Can anyone tell me what king of iPod I have, and if I can really install RockBox on it.

Thank you.

This Apple support page would be the best place to start: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353

There's also another way to tell: download Rockbox Utility, go to the configuration dialog and press the "Autodetect" button. If it detects an Ipod classic it will tell you that it found an unsupported player, if it finds a video it will select the correct player.

While detecting the classic might not be 100% reliable (it's possible Apple changed USB IDs in later versions, and that is what the detection is based upon) detecting the player if its supported is reliable. Of course, the only offical information about generations is the one at apples website, which was already been linked (and is linked from the IpodFAQ too)

If you search for MB029 on Google it's pretty obvious it's a Classic.
