I have no idea how to set up album art...
« on: October 27, 2008, 05:32:59 PM »
I've read pretty much the entire manual, I've looked up album art in wiki, but what it tells me there just confuses me more. I want to set up album art so that I can use the PictureFlow feature but so far I've had no luck.

www.rockbox.org/wiki/AlbumArt tells you how.

Since I don't know what on that page you are having problems with, you need to give more information.  Which step are you getting stuck on?  How are you transferring music?  How is it organised? Which player?  Using filetree or database?

right now i am putting music in through msc mode because if i set it to mtp mode, my pc asks me to install drivers. i dont really organize my music, i just drag and drop it into "removable disk (F:)" which is what appears when i plug in my player.  on the album art page, where it says "where to put the images", i have no idea what all that means. and idk what filetree or database are.

It would be a really good idea for you to have a look at the manual before going any further.

Yes, you want to use MSC

Yes, dragging and dropping is fine.  How is your music organised?

Filetree means you go to Files in Rockbox to play music.  Database means you go to Database to play your music.

Please do not use abbreviations like idk

Sorry about that. I use Filetree. I've gone over the manual again, and I still don't understand how to put album art. I have images in .bmp formats, they are 100x100, I just don't know where to place them, or under what name.

"draw" us a sample of your directory structure so that we can help you.
an example of mine would be:
/Music
    /1000 Homo DJs - 1990 - Supernaut
          /cover.100x100.bmp
          /01 - Supernaut.mp3
          /02 - Hey Asshole.mp3
          and on and on
     /Add N To (X) - 1999 - Avant Hard
          /cover.100x100.bmp
          /01 - Barry 7's Contraption.mp3
          /02 - Robot New York.mp3
          and on and on

Since you can see I organize my music with one album per folder, I have a "cover.100x100.bmp" in each folder, corresponding to the appropriate album cover.
Your organization might be different and need a different naming scheme.  Let's see how you do it.

So it would help if I organized my music. I see. OK, but when I plug in my player and "Removable Disk (F:)" appears, which is where I put my music in, I see the ".rockbox" folder, then other folders under it, and then all my music. Should I organize my music in folders inside the ".rockbox" folder, or keep it where it is?

The organization is up to you.  So far it has been unclear how your files were organized.  Now it seems that all of your music is in the root directory of your player.  You can save your cover art as filename.bmp or albumtitle.bmp and also keep them in the root of your player.  Alternatively, you may create a directory called albumart inside of the .rockbox directory and name your album covers artist-albumtitle.bmp.  These options correspond to options 1,2 and 4, respectively, from the AlbumArt page.

When I go to Pictureflow, it says "No albums found. Please enable data base. Plugin Error"...

Can you tell me what is unclear about that?  I can phrase things a different way, but if I don't know what is confusing you then it's a bit of a stab in the dark.

Forget about pictureflow until you have album art working in the WPS.  Is this yet the case?

OK, so I rename the .bmp image with the name of the album, and then I drag it into the Music folder with the rest of my music?

Yes, that will work provided the album title you use in the filename for the .bmp file is the same as the Album title as stored in the tags in the music files.

Ohh. OK that very much clears it up for me. I must have had a brain fart or something. OK, so can I change the Album title stored in the tags of my music files, because I got some of my songs from websites, and the album name listed is the name of the website, not the album.

Sure, any sort of tagging program will let you do that.

Something like MP3Tag, or something similar will do it.
