E250R file system error, need tips on repairing

I have a E250R running rockbox 3.0.  Something is wrong with the filesystem.  Chkdsk willl freeze the device.  Found that out when restarting my w2k box with the Sansa attached.

I took the device with me on a trip and it kept freezing when I connected it to my xp pro laptop.  Disabling autorun which seems to scan the device got me going again.

Obviously, I need to fix the file system.  If It was not rockboxed, I'd just upgrade it using sansa's website.  I'm not sure that is a good plan in it's current configuration.

Any suggestions welcome, as long as I stay out of a certain directory, the device works great.

Did you read the SansaFAQ?  There's a link to an "unbrick" page there.

In particular, there are instructions on formatting the disk using recovery mode.
