More visually appealing main menu?
« on: October 26, 2008, 11:17:20 AM »
As the first thing the majority of Rockbox users will see when they power on their device, the main menu items only consume a small part of the screen (at least on targets with larger screens such as my 5G iPod anyway).

This doesn't bother me all that much, but I think this could be improved upon without going to a huge amount of effort by using the pictureflow plugin as a starting point and having the main menu icons scrolling across instead of album art.

---

Ok I've now gathered that having the functionality of the pictureflow plugin may mean adding it to the Rockbox core, so you can feel free to disregard my naive "without going to a huge amount of effort" comment if it's inaccurate.

Like I said, I'm not really bothered by the standard layout, it works absolutely fine and I don't want the functionality to change, but if it could be made more attractive this way without requiring too much effort, then it may be worth considering.

Thank you  :)

Personally I think the existing menu is easier to use because you can see more items at once.  With these scrolling things you can only see the item you're looking at, and the previous/next items.

sorry, but I agree with Cool_Walking_ on this one-- it's easier to see everything that's there-- you get the "big picture" of rockbox this way.

While this isn't a bad idea in theory, it pretty much falls into the eye candy category and the devs usually shy away from that sort of thing as a main feature, especially if it reduces current usability.

You can always increase the font size and make larger icons.

The only problem with increasing the font size is it will change the main font used in the WPS as well and possibly mess it up a little 'cause it's not made for the larger font.  Best options there would be to select a WPS that uses a larger main font or tweak a preferred WPS with a smallish font to use a larger font without being messed up.
