You need to encode files with the correct resolution:

So you read the "How To Encode Files" section?  There are instructions there for a variety of programs.  Which program are you trying to use, and which step trips you up?

What steps did you take to convert into the proper format for Rockbox?

In WinFF, are you sure you used the correct preset?  There are a few sets of "Ipod" presets, including "XviD for Ipod", "H.264 for Ipod *Linux*", and "RB Apple iPod".  You need to use the "RB" ones.  The converted file should have a ".mpg" file extension.

Also make sure that the converted file plays properly on your computer - it's possible WinFF just couldn't convert it properly.
