iPod Color -- Can't load Rockbox.ipod: File not found error (HELP!)
(1/1)
r_a_miller:
Hi all:
I followed the download instructions to put Rockbox on my iPod Color. I downloaded the 'release version' to the F: drive (the drive my computer assigned my iPod); I did not download fonts because I chose the 'release version'; I extracted all contents, and they appeared to be in the root directory of the ipod.
Next I downloaded the bootloader to the F: drive. I pressed i and then ENTER to exit. I disconnected the ipod.
I hard reset the player holding Menu+Select and everything went to hell... Rockbox doesn't load, and I get the "Can't load rockbox.ipod File not found' error. I can NOT power down the machine. I can NOT get back to factory settings. Some PLEASE PLEASE help!!!
Rockbox looks great & I want to use it, but right now it has trashed my ipod!!!!!!!!
AlexP:
No, it has not trashed your ipod in any way whatsoever. I have changed the thread title to reflect this.
You have installed the bootloader correctly, but not the build - Rockbox itself. Follow the instructions on screen to put it into disk mode, then use Rockbox Utility to install the release. Even in the current state, you can boot the Apple Firmware as described in the manual.

Thanks very much!!!
Oddly, I did things slightly differently than you suggested -- I got back into disk mode by doing a hard reset then quickly pressing the play button; then I ran the bootloader from my C: drive on my PC, not from the F: drive (Ipod).
Everything worked swimmingly after that, and Rockbox is fantastic!!

I'm glad you got it working, but just a couple of points for your information:
The bootloader is installed to your ipod, you cannot 'run' it from any drive. If you are talking about either ipodpatcher or rbutil, then you can store and 'run' those from wherever you like. As you say you pressed i then enter, this is ipodpatcher. You can store the exectuable wherever you like - at this point your "C:" and "F:" are both just hard drives.
And resetting then putting it into disk mode is exactly what I said to do, and is what the screen tells you to do - a reset followed by (I think) select + play - I guess you were still in fact pressing select too when you pressed play.
Anyway, all's well that ends well.
