iPod Video HDD Dead. Replace with Powerbook HDD???
« on: August 16, 2008, 10:29:55 PM »
So my iPod 30GB 5th gen Video has died. Specifically it shows the sad iPod icon and the hard drive makes this clicking noise when I try to start it. I've tried various things to fix it but nothing worked. I do have two old PATA PowerBook HDDs, one from a G3(80GB) the other from a G4(100GB). And I got this idea... What if I used one of the old powerbook HDDs to bring back to life my iPod, a la Frankenstein? I know that the powerbook HDD won't fit in the case, and would need some kind of adapter to connect the "new" HDD to the iPod, but I can't help but think it is possible. Any ideas on how to do this? Any other suggestions as to what should become of my iPod? Thanks.

Better idea: shop at iFixit!

I've purchased replacement hard drives from them already. They're a little pricey, but their quality is excellent and their shipping is lightning fast!

it is possible if you could find an adopter from your HDD to zif, so that you could connect your HDD to your ipods logic board.. i know of a Compact Flash Card to zif but if your lucky to find an IDE or SATA to zif adapter, then it worth a shot!... or perhaps you could contact the guy on this site http://www.tarkan.info/20080126/tutorials/32gb-compact-flash-ipod  and could guide you on how to's!

Changed zip to zif, for future readers and strikethrough on SATA because portable players don't use SATA.
