Sansa e280 MOV video files
« on: October 16, 2008, 03:10:57 AM »
I am new here and so this may have already been discussed.  I already have quite a few MOV files which is the format used by the native Sansa software to watch videos.  I would prefer to use the same files for both Native sansa and rockbox (rather than reconverting the file to MPG and taking up more space).

Is there a way to watch the MOV video files on Rockbox?  If not, is it being consider as a future enhancement?

Thanks,
Joel

No, there is no way.  Rockbox plays MPEG1/2.  Keep in mind that Rockbox works on many different devices, the original firmwares of which (if they play video at all) use different formats.

MOV is just a container anyway - I think that the Sansa use MJPEG?

It could of course be supported if someone sat down and wrote the code.  In my opinion though there are other formats that it would be good to support way before this one.

Not sure you understood the original question.  Its not about converting.  I convert stuff all the time.  The issue has to do with the fact that those files are already residing in the Sansa and can be read and displayed by native software.  I wanted to be able to watch the videos using either the native software or rockbox.  Converting means spending extra time to not only convert it but make sure it has the right dimensions, etc.

It is really simple to use the native desktop utility to convert and dl to the sansa.  standard mpeg won't work as I recollect since it is the wrong dimensions so even mpeg needs to be reconverted (since I don't keep video in anything other than 720x480 or 1080/HD).

Regards,
Joel

I get that and I didn't get the Sansa for video though it does it.  So I could always boot native to watch the MOVs if I wanted to but even with glasses it is barely watchable anyway.  Just wanted to make sure the previous responder knew it wasn't just about converting.

Frankly, its not worth the extra effort to make the MPEGs work on a display that needs a magnifying glass to watch the video --- LOL

I have tons of MPEG2 videos already as I record using HTPC system since 2003. But they still need to be converter to this format. I use to use Blaze Media Pro on my Zvue 250 PMP to do 254x160 was fast. But I am sure there are programs. As for the screen size 1.8 isn't that bad. Really these are easy to carry and just like your cell phone can view movies. RockBox offers a lot more features.
