How do you have your rockbox music library set up / organized?
« on: October 15, 2008, 05:32:36 PM »
Are you a '1 big folder' or a super neat freak and have a system of folders?

For me, I have it folders by genre, but very general genre. Like for example a Rock folder and all kinds of rock goes into that folder. From metal rock to indie rock. And so on, but than i find some songs that are completely in between 2 genre so this system isn't working out.
So instead I have this new set up with 4 Folders (followed by subfolders)
-Alpha (Folders A-Z each artist alphabetized going in their correct folder)
-NOW (new songs i want to listen to that I will sort when it gets old)
-Soundtrack (soundtrack folder)
-Compilations (a folder for artist where I only have a few songs and too little to put in my alpha folder)

What's your set up?

I have mine sorted either by artist, then album (in the case of "normal" music), or by game series, then each game in that series (in the case of all my game soundtracks).

My filing system isn't exactly consistent, but it's organized how I like it and how I can find everything and keep related things together.

With a couple of exceptions (like compilations and video game music) I use this structure:

  • Audio
    • Audiobooks
      • *author* - *book title*/filename
    • Comedy
      • *artist*/[*year*] - *album*/*disk #**track #* - *title*
    • Music
      • *artist*/[*year*] - *album*/*disk #**track #* - *title*

Similar to the others, I use <artist>/<year> <album>/<track> - <title>.<ext>, with mostly inconsistent exceptions for comedy/audiobooks/soundtracks.

*Years* ago I used to have 1 big folder populated by the single tracks, but once you pass the 1000 song mark, it becomes apparent that something better is needed.  Now I mostly have full albums, and with over 600 artists, organisation is pretty important.  I could still do it better though >_>

well i have mine setup like this...

in root of my Sansa e250 i have a folder called 'OGG Music' which contains ALL my music which has folders for each artist and the name of that particular album.

plus i use a free application called 'Mp3Tag' to label (basically change the tag data so it appears proper in Rockbox ;) ) all my songs (.ogg files) by artist/year/cd name etc etc ... so it stays professional ;)

and in general when playing my music i usually use the 'database' > 'artist' and then select whatever artist i want to listen to at that time.

Audio
      Artist
            Album
                  tracknumber - title
Classical
      Composer
            Album
                  tracknumber - title

Spoken Word
      Author
            Book
                  tracknumber - title

Spoken Word also includes radio stuff etc. as
Spoken Word
      Show
            Episode
                  tracknumber - title

I just use the file tree, not the database.

This is how my audio files are organised on my PC:

- Music
    - Artist
        - Album

- Comedy
    - Artist
        - Album

- Audiobooks
    - Author
        - Book

I use drag & drop in MSC mode to move stuff onto my player (sansa e280), and tend to lump music, comedy etc together when theyre actually on the player, i.e. it all goes in the MUSIC folder.

With some exceptions for radio plays, audiobooks, and some computer and video game music, my arrangement is:

- Music
   - Artist
       - Album
           - track number - title

My game music is:

- Game
    - tracknumber - title

Stuff like the High Voltage SID Collection has its own folder, and radio plays are arranged as:

- Series title
     - Episode
         - (all tracks here)

Typically for albums:
\Genre\Album\##-Title
If I have several albums by that artist then:
\Genre\Album\Artist\##-Title
An album with tracks by various artists:
  Album\## - Track Artist - Title
I'm very satisfied with the album part of the scheme.

I group some individual tracks into
\Genre\Individual Tracks\
or if more by one artist
\Genre\Individual Tracks\Artist\
or
\Genre\Artist\Individual Tracks\
I'm not entirely satisfied with this part.

If I have more music in a genre, the genre grouping uses a more specific label.  If I have less, it is grouped with others under a more general label.  Some genres just go into "other".  I am satisfied with this part; it's better than grouping by ID3 genre.

Just a little addition to that for albums that have various artists:

- Music
   - Artist
       - Album
           - track number - title
   -  Compilations
       -  compilations series name (like "Buddha Bar", "Now That's What I Call Music", etc)
            - Album
                - track number - title

if it's a full album i sort it by album(and then disc if the album has multiple) artist name before album name in the folder name.
if its just a bunch of songs from one artist then i sort it by artist
otherwise i just "throw" it in the music folder ;D

there are a few exceptions.

so basically:

- Music
   - "Artist - Album"
      - "Track"
   - "Artist - Album"
      - "Disc"
         - "Track"
   - "Album Collection"(in this case "Halo Official Soundtracks")(this would be an example of an exception)
      - "Album/Soundtrack"
         - "Disc"
            - "Track"
   - "Artist"
      - "Track"
   etc...
   - "Track"
   etc...

Music\Artist\ (Year) Album\01- Song title
Audiobook\Name of Book.mp3
Radio Show\Date-Subject (txt file matching name explaining whom is speaking and other info)

I never use Genre with music as that labeling is pretty vague when I get a Heavy Metal album with a popish tune in the middle or an Adult Contemporary like ballad.

As far as my music goes, it's:
\Music\<Artist>\<Album>\<Track> - <Title>.<ext>

I also have a podcast folder that those are just thrown into and replaced as updated; and an audiobook folder for my books.
