Minor change in behaviour - is there an option somewhere?
« on: October 15, 2008, 12:17:57 AM »
I have a rockboxed iPod Mini. I browse my music by database, and I often select a few songs by different artists and queue them up so they'll be played one after the other. I also like to add albums song-by-song, so as to skip those I don't like during selection instead of having to do it later when they start playing.

This requires me to navigate to the song in question, keep the button pressed, and then select playlist - insert. There's also the very irritating problem that if I just click the button, because I absent-mindedly forget to keep it pushed or because someone bumps me or something, the queue will go to the dogs as the player swaps it with the current album.

What I'd like would be for a simple click of the button to add the song to the end of the current list, and for an option to replace the list with the current album to be in the long-press menu.

Can this be done easily? Is there some option that might help me?

Thanks.

This can't be done without rewriting some of the programming.

There is an option to warn on dynamic playlist deletion though. This would mean if someone bumps your elbow causing you to try to overwrite it, you'll get a warning screen asking if you're sure.

Yep, found the option. Thanks.

As for the changes, what exactly is involved? I don't know much about programming, but if all I have to do is move around a string of code or three I think I can handle it.

Rockbox playlist functionality is very powerful, but it's too much trouble.  There should be a single step way to add a file to the playlist.  Navigating menus is acceptable when I'm just listening to music but it is not acceptable when I am doing other things.  Because of this I create playlists much less often when using Rockbox.

Yeah, I should probably do some programming and fix this myself.

Whether what you do would be considered a fix or not very much depends on your preference and point of view.

Other people have thought about and begun working on code for this very issue, long ago. On targets that have an extra button (like ipods, where select and next do the same thing in the browser), it does seem kinda silly to me that we can't make use of one of them to have a one-click insert button. There's a working patch in the tracker (see FS#2653) that I've been using for, well, about two years now. I don't know how the devs feel about it currently--other than that I believe it needs much more work to meet Rockbox's standards...

Great - will give it a try later on.

Edit: hmm... applying a patch seems a lot harder than I at first thought. Am I reading this wrong or do I need the source?
