trouble converting ipod 5th gen 80gb to FAT32

i am following the tutorial on
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodConversionToFAT32
 i am pretty unfamiliar with the language being used, but i am ok until i get to step c.  i do everything the instructions say to do but once i run this command
dd if=mbr-video80gb-2048.bin of=/dev/ipod1
i get this message
dd: /dev/ipod1: Permission denied
 does anyone know what to do

You don't have the required permissions, as the error message says. Get them ;) Usually you can do this by becoming root.

what are these permissions that i need? how would i go about getting them?  what is root?
