Rockbox 'Ipod' skin...
« on: October 09, 2008, 05:33:48 AM »
Hi, quick question is there a skin for rockbox (namely the 2gB nano) that looks exactly, or very much like the normal ipod firmware?

I wish to put rockbox on my girlfriends ipod, but she will think i've broken it, and wont understand when i try to explain if it looks much different.

i have searched, but i cannot find any relevant results. also, I can't test any skins i find, as i dont have an ipod of my own.

any help much appreciated,
thanks

Although there's nothing to stop you making your own one of these, we don't allow distribution of themes which mimic Apple's (or indeed any other of the large manufacturer's) look. We don't want to be on the wrong end of anything copyright related - which is why you can't find what you're looking for.

Thanks for the quick replies.

thats fair enough. So i'd have to make my own...

Forgive me, but its been a few years since i used rockbox, but if i wanted to, would it be possible to re-map buttons to the same functions as the ipod firmware? or more accurately: how hard would it be? (i have experience in a few programming languages, including c, if thats how deep i'd have to get to do it...)

Thanks for your help

The Apple firmware does several things with, for example, podcast handling and rating that Rockbox doesn't. You'd never be able to honestly disguise Rockbox as the Apple OS without adding a few whole features to it, and significantly rewriting what screens in Rockbox exist and how you get from one to another.

yeah... but i don't really care about that stuff. as long as it looks sufficiently similar i can pass it off as a firmware update...

however I'm getting the feeling that you guys don't really recommend it/approve, so i think ill give it a miss. Its not that important after all.

Thanks for all your help though.

It's absolutely not a question of approval, it's just a fact that if you wanted to clone the Apple button mappings, menus and Now Playing screen, you'd have to modify large chunks of the Rockbox code.

Why not just load Rockbox anyway (remembering you can dual-boot into the OF if required) and let its superiority speak for itself. I'm sure your girlfriend is smart enough to decide which one she likes best.

Maybe she'll be persuaded by the same reason as whatever it is that makes you want Rockbox on her ipod  ;)

Personally I find a lot of those differences very annoying on the original firmware now.  The few times I do use it doing things like pressing menu to go back one menu bugs me.  The whole setup now strikes me as not particularly intuitive.
