FIXED: 5.5G 30GB install problems
« on: October 02, 2008, 03:31:08 PM »
Basics:
Macbook, OS X 10.5.5
5.5G 30GB iPod Video

I have successfully converted the ipod to FAT32.  I have attempted every documented installation method and tip I could find in the forums and I still get the same generic 'rockbox.ipod' could not be found, along with the instructions to reset and put it into disc mode.  Unfortunately the documentation isn't exactly clear about what to do _after_ it is in disc mode.

Regardless, I'm not a moron and am very comfortable in the terminal.  All of the extra instructions pertaining to 5.5G 30GB ipods may have led to a mistep, as I'm seeing something in the volumes path that I don't think should be there.  When my ipod is connected in disc mode I see an 'IPOD' and an 'IPOD 1' in /Volumes.

Here is a screenshot of my terminal showing the /Volumes listing, the proof that .rockbox is there and (as far as I can tell) is in the right place, along with the contents of the directory being in there correctly.

Can anyone offer any help?  I've been checking various forum posts and google searching for hours now without much luck, and I'm thinking I'm just overlooking something simple.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance!

EDIT:  Not sure why it's scaling my screenshot, so I dropped the image quality a bit to get it under the 128kb attachment limit.

Are you sure the volume "IPOD" is the correct one? Also, I'm quite surprised it shows you two volumes. Have you checked the partition layout? I had the Ipod showing up as two volumes (on linux, though) once when I mistakenly changed the partition layout to something wrong ...

Do you have the same issue when using Rockbox Utility? Which installation type(s) did you try in Rockbox Utility?

UPDATE:  Fixed!  Rockbox is now working on my ipod.

The problem was the second partition.  I'm still not sure why it is there (it is extremely small in size, something like 98kb).  In the terminal, all I had to do was:

cd /Volumes/IPOD
mv .rockbox ../IPOD\ 1/

then install the fonts package by manually unzipping to /Volumes/IPOD\ 1/.rockbox

and it is now working!

Rbutil was only recognizing /Volumes/IPOD and was putting the .rockbox files there, even though the ipodpatcher was installing the bootloader correctly (which I guess makes sense, there's only one place the bootloader can go).

============

It appears that all the ipod's normal files are in /Volumes/ipod 1 when I take a closer look, but only one option shows up in the rbutil when I run it.

I have tried both the regular automated install option and the separate option on the install tab, using the OS X version of the utility.

I followed the guide for reformatting to fat32 quite closely, so I'm not sure why it would show two partitions.  I had to enable disk mode in itunes to get the ipod to persistently show up in the disk utility, because otherwise it would only show up for a second and then disappear (this info seems to be missing from the general documentation, or perhaps something is wrong with my ipod).  Maybe the reason it's showing two partitions is because that's how itunes enables the disk mode?
