No, it's simply that the Rockbox developers who are familiar with .WMA haven't had time to do anything about it. They have real lives too.

is there anyway to use the previous version of the wma codec? say one from early Aug 2008?

As mentioned on IRC, a bug report would good, with a recipe to reproduce and if possible a sample of a problem file.  Few devs read the forums, and a bug report is the best way to bring things to the attention of the correct people.
