Requested codec
« on: September 26, 2008, 11:02:15 AM »
Hello.
Is it possible that RockBox can read chiptune/module files like :

- YM files (i love Amstrad & Atari computer...)
- IT files
- XM files
- XMZ files

This type of iles (like MOD files supported in RockBox) are very low-size and native support in RockBox will be wonderfull for old-computer'lover ;-)

Thanks a lot for your Job

Sébastien (sorry for bad english, i'm french)

I'd check in the wiki to make sure, but it's slashdotted at the moment - but I'm fairly certain Rockbox already supports chiptune.

Rockbox supports the following chiptune formats:

* NSF (Nintendo 8-bit music)
* SPC (Super NES music files)
* SID (Commodore 64 chiptunes)
* MOD (Amiga Tracker format)
* SAP (Atari POKEY chiptunes)

There's a patch in Flyspray to add GBS (Game Boy Music) playback; you can search for it by clicking "Patches" on the left.

There is also the Mikmod patch (http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/8806), which works pretty well on my Sansa. It should play all formats that Mikmod supports; the Big Four (IT, MOD, S3M, XM) have been tested.

The only thing about the Mikmod patch is that it's not really a codec, but a "viewer" plugin. Unless it's rewritten as a codec, there's little hope of it making it into SVN.

And modplay is a viewer that's not, and probably won't be until it surpasses the capabilities as a codec of the limited mod actual codec that exists.

That's possibly the weirdest sentence I've ever heard. It's kinda genius actually.

Isn't that what your original question in the thread was?

The simplest answer is "The people who want it (like you) haven't done the work yet."

There isn't any news, because nobody that's interested in playing these has done any work. This is the same answer as last time.

If you're curious to track (potential) updates to the (non) status of codecs, searching the flyspray tracker is your best bet.  Even after (if) a codec gets committed you'll still be able to find it in the search, and the chances of a new codec appearing in the SVN source w/o going through flyspray are slim to none.

last post I found about playing IT/XM/S3M/YM files is older than 1 year - is there anything new in the meantime? I would be really really happy if theres a way to get these formats played on my sansa clip+
