Drive Reads, Writes, H340 See Folders But Not Files

Addendum: 17 Oct 08 I've tested the Samsung HS122JbB 120 gig hardrive in 3 iRiver H3xx players and gotten ATA error messages with all three. The comparable Toshiba MK1214 drive has worked in all three machines.
Hello Rockbox,
I'm upgrading my H340 hard-drive to Samsung HS122JB 120 gig hardrive.
Dealextreme sent me the correct 'white and blue' ribbon connector for my IDE adaptor and now I can read/write files onto the Samsung Drive.
Booted to the iRiver firmware, I can see the Samsung drive in Windows Explorer and write files to it. I've copied some .FLAC files and the Rockbox files folder. I can play the music files with Foobar, so they're definitely there.
I CANNOT access those files through the iRiver h340 itself. Oddly, I can SEE the file folders on the player but pushing NAV does not OPEN the folders. I know the files are there, I just can't access them through the H340
Before installing it, I formatted the Samsung HS122JB using Swissknife as one FAT32 partition -- it reported 114gig availabe.
If I try to boot the Samsung drive to Rockbox I get error -32 messages.
If I re-install the original 40gig drive Rockbox boots perfectly.
Any ideas?
Thanks, piscator

Have a good look round here, there is something about certain newer/larger drives needing a modified Rockbox bootloader.
EDIT:
I found this thread here;
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=16423.0
But that is an H100 series player, I know that the hardware is very similar and I'm assuming (DANGEROUS!) the bootloader code is very similar so maybe it is the same issue...
Maybe you should wait till one of the real experts comes along...

Multiplex, thanks for the link.
Interesting that the troublesome drives mentioned were Samsung. My problem is with a Samsung drive also... I'm beginning to think there's something a little different about the Samsung drives, because:
I just swapped the Samsung HS122JB for the equivalent Toshiba, MK1214GAH
The Toshiba MK1214GAH with DealExtreme adaptorworks perfectly!
My original 40 gig Toshiba works perfectly!
The Samsung HS122JB with DealExtreme adaptor is 'buggy as heck'
I'm under the impression that these drives are replacements for each other and can't understand why only one would fail. Maybe the code you referenced would make a difference. It's beyond my pay grade :-)

There is another good thread in the context of Compact Flash cards with ATA interfaces that suggests that some register(s) has been redefined. maybe Rockbox is relying on a now out of date specification which is why the newer higher capacity devices are an issue.
Alternatively, my gut feeling is that Rockbox is doing it properly, but no-one else does, so the developers of new hardware quietly dropped support for certain comands/features that the rest don't use while still claiming compatibility... based entirely on my experience of a differnet but related industry (and many years of cynicism).
Removing that function seems to cure the -32 errors with newer devices, BUT building a bootloader and flashing your player with it is a bit scary (putting Rockbox on my first H120 many years ago was scary enough!).
I have no experience of these issues - I just spotted the correlation of reports in the Forums.

Moderators, feel free to delete this thread. This information is more completely covered in another thread.
