Installing Rockbox, Still Uncertain
« on: September 25, 2008, 12:15:00 AM »
hello guys,
as you can probably see, i am new here. i have been aware of rock box for a while now and nearly tried installing it a while ago. i steered away from it as i didn't want to void my warranty.

but now, my warranty time has expired and I have done research about installing rock box. however, i am still uncertain, i have heard of people's players becoming bricked as a result of a failed installation.

I have downloaded the rock box utility installation program and am aware that all i have to do is click on the complete installation box  to load it all on. I have a few questions though...

Is there any chance that it will fail and brick my e280?

How much memory will it require? my player is full, like 1MB free full.  Will there be an error during installation if there is not enough room or is this checked before installation starts?

Is there anything else i have to download? latest build etc or will the installation program take care of all that for me?

they are the main questions about installation. the other ones are just to do with the firmware.

Will an 8gb micro SD be supported by rock box? i have an 8gb player with a 2gb micro SD and i believe it is to small.

and does rock box need to read all the songs off the memory card before you can play music like the original sansa firmware.

Looking forward to getting Rock box installed, I just need a little clarification before i click the button.

cheers, Cameron

You need a couple MB free at least.  I recommend freeing up 5-10MB to be safe.  MicroSD up to at least 32GB is supported.

Theres no chance of bricking a sansa from an install.  You can't actually brick from MSC mode at all, you need recovery mode to do that (and even then its generally not brickable, just difficult to fix if you screw up from recovery mode) and the rockbox install doesn't need recovery mode.  Usually people brick the e200 non-R models during uninstall because they don't read the directions and uninstall without putting the retail firmware, and thus have to venture into recovery mode.

Thanks, I'll install it in a moment then.

does it support micro SDHC or just micro SD. You need a different reader for the SDHC don't you?

If i can get a 16gb card I'll be really happy!

Everything starting with 4GB is SDHC, meaning your question already has been adressed ... and please check the FAQ first, it has this question answered.

And you don't need a different reader for SDHC -- you need one that's compatible, and most are not.

Oh :-[

I just tried installing. the installer did it's stuff but when it gets to themes it says

"the following error occoured: Unknown error"

it does this while doing complete installation and when i select themes from the extras tab.

any ideas why?

Edit: the games and fonts packages work fine.

As the page where you downloaded Rockbox Utility says

"NOTE: due to issues with the themes download site Rockbox Utility uses the theme installation dialog currently will display an error. You need to install themes manually from the WpsGallery for now."
