Formate ipod
« on: September 23, 2008, 04:58:08 PM »
Hello!
I like to use my ipod 5th genertion 30GB as usb device on my car radio. but my radio cant handle the ipod because of the disk formate. I read, that when i format my ipod (e.g. in FAT32) the ipod wont work anymore. (Logicaly, because the original ipod software was deleted). Is it possible to put rockbox on a FAT32 formated ipod and make it run whithout the apple firmware? will i have to install the bootloader first on the ipod? is this possible? Please answer.
Heavy Greetings from Germany BBR

Sorry. my english isnt the best. hope you understand my thoughts.

iPods can be in FAT32 or HFS+ modes, and Rockbox already requires you to convert to FAT32 before installation. This will then work with Rockbox and the original software.

Installing Rockbox does not remove the Apple firmware, as formatting the Ipod using FAT32 doesn't either. The Ipod has a firmware partition that is independent of the format of the data partition (of course you need to take care not to overwrite the firmware partition, but you need that partition in any case -- even with Rockbox installed the partition is needed for booting).
