H120 not able to accept FLAC files "File too deep" error
« on: September 23, 2008, 08:06:36 AM »
Hi all,
My H120 gives me the following "the Path is too deep" error when I try to copy FLAC files.
I don't think it's a Rockbox problems as it says the same when in iriver bootloader, but I thought I'd ask here to see whether anyone has had this problem, and what you did to solve it.
I've tried updating, and both EAC Media Monkey as convertors.

I moved your post, as you have posted in the "Installation/Removal/Flashing" section, and this isn't an installation-related post.

Try moving your files down one folder. FAT32 doesn't allow a path more than eight folders deep.

Also - the entire path to the file must not exceed 256 characters IIRC.

I've googled this a fair bit, and tried all the advice, then came to someone who suggested using another file transfer program like Teracopy; so I did, and guess what it worked.
Sooo, if you have the same issue with USB media devices get Teracopy.  ;)

What ever happened to just drag-and-drop?

Well, I don't think this is a good idea. The maximum path length for a volume is 256 characters on FAT, and even if you find a program to circumvent this a lot may choke if you do so. Besides, I don't see a reason for filenames that long ...

That's the point, the filename isn't that long, the issue seems to arise no matter what (including drag and drop).
It's a wierd one, but fixed (in my case) this way.

well, the question is not the filename -- it's the filename including the path. May I ask how long that is in your case?

That sounds strange -- you might want to check the filesystem for errors. It somewhat smells like you have some ...
