Trouble starting up
« on: September 23, 2008, 04:44:12 AM »
Please be gentle with me -- I realise that there are so many factors involved that I'm not going to make it easy, but I'm hoping at least one person out there will be able to say, "Oh, that!  That's easy!"

I've used Rockbox for about two, maybe even three years and have loved it.  I recently bought a new PC and, sticking with XP, downloaded Monkey Media, which I use to sync my iRiver 140.  It took a while to work out the settings on the new MM, but burnt some discs to my hard drive and then set it to sync, which it did.  Unplugging it, however, I then went to start it up and the screen on the iRiver got stuck at "Loading" and went no further.

Complicating things more, I resorted to the iRiver software to play songs, and it now seems to sort each song within each album alphabetically.

Anyone have any idea what's gone wrong, here?  I'm guessing the problem is with Rockbox, but I'd really hate to see it go.

Thanks,

adam K

Rockbox doesn't affect the original firmware, so whatever is happening there is something to do with it or mediamonkey.

As for Rockbox not loading, do I understand correctly that you see the bootloader output then it gets stuck?

yes -- I'm doing it right now.  The "Loading" line comes on and it just freezes up.  I can tell it's frozen because I've got it plugged in and the battery icon's not flashing.

Oh, but it also helps me find out that I'm using CVS 060212

Yeah, me too.

Oh, crikey, does that mean I have to find my way through it all again?

Yep. Rockbox went through many, many major changes since 2006... we've made it better, faster stronger... we have the technology! :)

Seriously though, the manual is always kept as up to speed as we can keep it. Check it out if you need some info on how to operate the menus.

I have no idea what you mean by this question, but just use the Rockbox Utility to upgrade to the current build.

As for the original firmware displaying your files alphabetically, my guess is that your files are named

filename.mp3

rather than

xx filename.mp3

where xx is the track number.

Thanks for all the feedback, but I eventually went back, formatted the iRiver, re-loaded all the tunes (over 8000 of them) from my back-up drive and re-installed not only the last iRiver software but also downloaded and installed the latest Rockbox.

I said "go through it all again" because I'm extremely techno-phobic, and this isn't easy for me.  I have to take a deep breath, have several pages of printed instructions around me (2 from the Rockbox manual, 2 from the iRiver forum) and very slowly work my way through them both.

Now that it all seems to be working, I have yet another problem has cropped up, but I will post on that separately.  For those who can't wait:  the sound, when played through the remote, is plagued by an insistent clicking and buzzing.  This disappears when the headphones are plugged directly in but, before you blame the remote (which is only two years old) I should point out that when played with the iRiver software, this is not a problem -- it only seems to happen when played via Rockbox through the remote.  I will take a look at the manual before I post this query, but I'm at work right now and, oddly, the page with the manual on it has been blocked by our IT people since yesterday.

Thanks again,

Remote clicking is a known problem... There is an option in General Settings -> Display -> Remote-LCD Settings called Reduce Ticking. Try turning this on and see if it helps.

Thanks so much for that -- I hadn't had time to check the manual, but I knew there was something, somewhere about reducing ticking.  However, while it's a lot better,  I'm pretty sure it's still much worse than it was before I installed the new version.  Has anybody else found this or am I just being paranoid?
