I was going to install rockbox than ....
« on: September 20, 2008, 06:05:53 AM »
... than a blackout at my house stopped the operation . once light was back i booted my debian etch machine and the device (those in /dev/) disappeared , i mean i don't have a device my machine can see and where i can carry on to install rockbox , please help i don't know what to do . It happened long time ago , now i have a ubuntu hardy haron and i have installed some hfs tools hfsutils, ipod package gtkpod and nothing the device doesn't exists:
Code: [Select]
root@localhost:~# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000a358d

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1   *           1       12754   102446473+  83  Linux
/dev/sda2           12755       14402    13237560   83  Linux
/dev/sda3           14403       14593     1534207+  82  Linux swap / Solaris

I tell you the all story . It is not a matter of hfs support it is that before install the rockbox , by cryptsetup,  i was going to crypt the ipod and the blackout happened just after i finished to fill the device with random data with dd and /dev/random ... Am i crazy? , well none can say that if there wasn't the blackout , maybe!!!
Now if i attach the ipod to the ubuntu (or any of my linux machines) the only think i see is the rockbox bootloader on the ipod itself:
Code: [Select]
version 2.0
ipod version: 0xFFFFFFFF
Samsung HS030GA
No partition found
Hold menu+select to reboot than select+play for diskmode
No partition found cause there is no known file system to work on just a device full of random data.
Please help!!!!

First of all, don't panic.

Second, boot the Ipod into emergency disc mode. Then you can access the disc and repair it. Besides, how do you expect a crypted Ipod to work?

I'm going to say something more about the state of my ipod , i'm sure i haven't missed anything in my first post but ...
There is no apple software on my ipod not a vfat or hfs file system on it just the rockbox bootloader .
Before encrypting the device, i formatted it , filling it with data taken from the kernel random generator device /dev/random and the application dd , it's usual practice doing this before encrypting a device. The blackout was just after this so on the actual ipod hard disk there is no filesystem any OS can see , the only thing i managed to install was the rockbox bootloader which is telling me .... what i sayd in my first post... . There is no mac apple software , just rockbox bottloader saying "No partition found" and not responding to any of the previous post said commands !II have followeb the instructions the link you gave me , but i haven't an apple software anymore on my ipod or a hfs file system on it .... i have lost my ipod !!!  :'(

Utterly utterly irrelevant - the emergency disk mode code is stored in the ipod's flash - you *cannot* delete it.
