H340 Please help with ATA -11 Error
(1/1)
piscator:
I'm installing a Samsung HS122JB 120 gig drive using the DealExtreme adaptor in my iRiver H340 and following Linus instructions in the wiki.
The ribbon connector: how far into the hard-drive connector is the blue strip supposed to extend? The problem below may stem from my having the wrong ribbon. Odd thing is that I have both the ES&S and the DealXtreme adaptor and neither ribbon strip seems to go far enough into the the Samsung drive.
The result is that I get this error message:
ATA Error: -11
Insert USB and press a button
Inserting the USB and pushing a button does nothing.
If I hold the OFF button (leaving the USB connected) the H340 reboots to the iRiver firmware v1.29 K and reports this error message:
"Check HDD connection"
The H340 then goes to "sleep" and pushing any button shows, "Charging" with the iRiver firmware. Unplugging the USB cable displays the message "disconnected" and boots the iRiver firmware. The 'file tree' is empty (no folders appear).
I read the thread discussing recompiling, but don't quite understand it.
My Rockbox version is r18294-0808150
Rockbox Bootloader v5
Battery voltage 4.1v
Part 2: Ribbon cable with Blue & White strip. Found this ribbon in the package and it seem to fit per Linus's illustration. Rockbox bootloader tries to load and then reports this error message:
ATA Error -1
Insert USB and press a button
Is this progress?
Still can't read the drive from my computer
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I suspect your HDD is not making the required connection with the player. I do not think this is a logical problem but rather a mechanical one. Try to get the ribbon cable inserted correctly (orientation matter I think) and this problem should correct itself. I guarantee nothing, this is just my best guess as to what is happening.

Thanks for your reply!
As ammended above, I found a ribbon in the DealXtreme package with one white and one blue end. This seems to fit properly, but returns:
ATA Error -1
Insert USB and press a button
After reviewing Linus installation pictures and reading everything possible, I suspect you're right -- the Samsung drive isn't making the connection.
By the way, I saw your iRivers on Ebay and almost bid big on one, knowing you'd 'done it right'

Revision: October 08 2008:
Substituting a Toshiba drive (MK1214GAH) for the Samsung (HS122JB) solved the problem. I used the exact same Dealextreme adaptor on both drives.
I fiddled with the Samsung drive for a month, trying to get, as David suggested, 'a proper connection'. I tried 2 Dealextreme adaptors, 1 Eskabel adaptor and several different ribbon connectors. No combination worked properly.
