iPod doesn't starts anymore
« on: September 14, 2008, 05:28:27 AM »
Hello together!
I've installed Rockbox on my iPod 5th Gen. 30GB.
I klicked on Database and there stand something from filesearching or something like that.
So i klicked ok and Rockbox searched 1,500 Files.
After that i had to reboot my iPod.
I turned it off and now i can't start it anymore...
What's wrong?  ???

(sorry, if my english isn't so good... i'm german)

charge the battery, even if the Ipod appears to be off. Charge it for a *long* time (24h or so), preferably using a wall charger.

And please search the forums before asking, this has been asked like a million times before.

1) Slide the Hold switch on then back off again.
2) Keep holding Menu + Select (with fingers very still) until it boots.

You were given this suggestion before:

1) Slide the Hold switch on then back off again.
2) Keep holding Menu + Select (with fingers very still) until it boots.

Follow these instructions to get your iPod to turn on again.

hi

love rockbox, have it installed on my old 4th gen ipod.

I had the same problem, so had to press menu and select.  :P

When it boots it shows the battery as about 1/3 full which is what it should be.

I'm just curious to know if (when using rockbox) its best to always keep the battery at least 1/2 full to boot?

My battery is old but far from washed out. Perhaps I set the wrong value of the battery for rockbox (will check). I have read that when 'cold booting' the ipod can draw quite a bit of current.

thanks ........

You may be talking about a problem with the Apple boot loader.  It sometimes just plain fails to start when you press Select.  It's also a problem with iPods that don't even have Rockbox, but less common because the OF (Original Firmware) doesn't actually shut down, it just goes into a "suspend" mode.

EDIT: Err, ignore the above.  It's applicable to 5th gen iPods, don't know about 4th gen.

You shouldn't need anywhere near 1/2 the battery to boot.  I've booted before with readings of 3% capacity.

I think this setting is only used to calculate "time remaining".  It doesn't affect anything else.

hey thanks cool_walking for the insight;

When I go to turn on the ipod a "low battery" indicator flashes on the screen. Then, the only way to boot is with 'menu and select'. Once on the ipod's battery indicator shows plenty of juice.

I've got a feeling I might have to do a rockbox reset, no big deal. I can remember most of my settings  ::). Plus the ipod is getting on in age ...... (like me)

anyway thanks again cool_walking.......

cheers

I don't know for certain, but I would speculate this is just a limitation of the hardware, such that you have to wait for the battery reading to "settle".  When I first turn on my 5G iPod, the battery reading does fluctuate a couple of percentage points.  Anyway, should wait for one of the devs to answer.

"Rockbox reset" is a bit ambiguous but I guess you mean reinstalling Rockbox.  Your settings are all stored in .rockbox/config.cfg. You can back that up and copy it back on, or just unzip a new build over the top of the old one, because the .zip doesn't include config.cfg, so it doesn't get overwritten.

Thanks cool_walking,

great tip about the 'unzipping' a new build.

I reset the settings under "Main menu"--->Settings--->Manage Settings--->Reset Settings. It probably just clears the config.cfg file like you said.

At present its fully charged and turning on properly. If I have more problems, I'll do the unzip trick as suggested. I am confident it's more a hardware thing  like you said................ so will post findings later when the battery gets flat, thanks again for your support.......... :D

<edit> This forum link seems to mention the same issue I am having,  http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=16305.0. I have a battery icon flashing onscreen quickly.. then it wont start normally.

<edit number 2> I think I know that the root of the problem is using the "play" button to shutdown. Currently I use the 'Idle Poweroff' function, set to one minute to turn off. Also, I can now duel boot happily  8)  which isn't relevant......
