Can't remove .rockbox and other bad stuff
« on: September 13, 2008, 04:22:26 PM »
So I tried to install rockbox. With the provided utility. Everything seemed to go fine, then I rebooted my 2GB 1G FAT32 ipod nano, and got an error message saying that rockbox couldn't open a file. I forgot which one it was, but I'll find out if I can fix this problem. I can't remove the .rockbox directory: it's a read only filesystem. When I try and configure the uninstaller, I get this message:
Quote
Your configuration is invalid. This is most likely due to a new installation of Rockbox Utility or a changed device path. The configuration dialog will now open to allow you correcting the problem.
Upon which I make sure I have the right settings, and press "continue", upon which I get the error above.
Can anyone help me?

Sounds like filesystem issues. Try running chkdsk /f (or fsck.vfat) on the player -- uninstallation on a read only drive is obviously not possible ;)

D:\>chkdsk /f
The type of file system is FAT32
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount to this volume? <Y/N>

Sorry. I decided Y would get me farther.

Volume dismounted. All opened handles to this volume are now invalid.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
1.) I have no idea what could be using the drive besides the terminal.
2.) After the prompt, the script exits, either with a "This volume will be checked..." message or silence.

So what happened after you restarted ?

So you scheduled it to run scandisk on reboot, it reboots and runs scandisk before Windows has booted.

What is the "same thing" that happened then?  Feel free to be descriptive and answer the question in less then 2 or 3 tries.

Sorry.
I am not sure what it meant by "scheduled", as it appeared that windows booted normally without any special actions whatsoever. When I did the command recommended in the second post, the same thing happened as I have already described.

And you rebooted it with the DAP connected throughout?

(I don't know if windows picks up USB devices early enough for this?)

If by "DAP" you mean "ipod usb cable", then yes. Sorry if I seem clueless.

Edit: I also have linux installed on my computer, if that helps.

DAP = Digital Audio Player, in your case ipod.

You could try fsck.vfat in linux.
