5th gen w/ new HD
« on: September 13, 2008, 01:54:48 AM »
Hi guys.
I just got a 5th gen 60gig Ipod with a toasted HD.
I took the 80gig out of my rockboxed iriver h10 and stuffed it into this thing.
it immediately came up into disk mode , thats good :)
On my windows PC, Itunes found it and wanted to restore it. thats good too :)
the the restore failed saying it could not procede because there were files in use by another system. thats bad???
was this because it was formatted and used on the iriver?
I copied off all of the files to a backup on my PC because the PC sees the 80gig of space.
then I put the current rockbox build on. it uncompressed according to the manual.
Then I tried to run the ipodpatcher and that failed saying it could not detect an ipod.
any ideas guys?

You need to get this to work, or do it manually.

Saying that there's an error is not very helpful without giving us the *exact* error message.  However, I guess iTunes is complaining that another process is still using the iPod's hard disk.

the exact error message was "could not proceed because there were files in use by another system"

anyway, I got it working.
apple was a little vague on how this restore works i guess.
I downloaded ipodupdater and then itunes restored the ipod just fine.
after that rockbox went in perfectly.

My guesses about the "files in use" message is one of two things :

a) You have a virus

b) Your *anti*-virus software is over-zealous.

I don't believe so.
i think it was merely the fact that Itunes did not have the files to restore and or the fact that the HD was not blank.

with Itunes 8 only installed I got the error.
as soon as I installed Ipodsetup.exe , Itunes restored fine.
no other changes to my system at all.
i am running XP w/ SP3 and all the latest updates. and Norton Antivirus with the latest updates.

iTunes downloads the files when it does the restore.

I doubt it cares what state the HDD is in.  Most of the times I've restored, the HDD was not blank.

that is strange then.
But the behavior witnessed is as described. Nothing was done outside that.
I tried to restore with itunes at least 8 times on its own and got the same error every time.
the very first time i tried the restore after installing ipodsetup, it worked.
perhaps if I'd re-installed itunes it would have the same result. I cannot say, only speculate.
regardless, now that rockbox is working, I can un-install itunes. hate it.
