upgrading SD memory in a Sansa e250 w/ Rockbox
« on: September 10, 2008, 11:20:47 AM »
I have been running Rockbox on my Sansa e250 and love it. My unit initally came with 2GB of internal memory and expandable by another max of 2GB via a SDHC memory card slot. Therefore a total max of 4GB

With Rockbox installed, I can now apparently use a max of an 8GB SDHC card in the expansion slot so can potentially have up to 10GB of memory. I think this is one of MANY great features I love about Rockbox, but will this show up when connected to a PC.

I ask cause I notice that the unit has to be in its original firmware mode in order for my PC to recognize it as a connected USB device. I'll turn it on in the Sansa mode and THEN connect it to my PC with the USB cable. Since this is the case & the original firmware only recognizes up to 2GB of memory in the exapnsion slot, will it recognize an 8GB SDHC? Or will it recognize only 2GB of the 8GB? Or will it maybe not recognize any of it at all since its too big for the orignal firmware to begin with? Just wondering before I maybe try to get an 8GB SDHC card.

The OF won't read SDHC cards, so be sure to buy a card reader along with your microSDHC card.

Well, the OF reads my 2GB SDHC that I currently had, but I was looking to possibly get an 8GB SDHC. I guess it won't read it, but as mentioned, I'll make sure I have a USB card reader of some sort that comes with it. Good idea. Thanks

Anything 2GB or less is regular MicroSD, not MicroSDHC.

Wouldn't it show this...

Example.
SANSA e250 (E:)
Removable Disk (F:)

The E: will be the 2GB and the F: would be your 8GB.

that's how I think it is.

No, because an 8GB card is SDHC.  The Original Sansa Firmware (which is what is active when connected via USB to your PC) does not support SDHC, and thus will only show drive "E:" in your example.

This may be incorrect.

A Sansa e200series always shows TWO drives on Windows.
If the microSD slot is empty, you just cannot access "F:" in this example.

As I don't own a SDHC card, I don't know exactly whats happening then, but my guess is the same as not having inserted a card.

Thought I'd mention something here... I have one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134795
and the little usb adapter that comes with the card is awesome. I'm using it now with my 16gb microSDHC and it works like a charm.

People on the sansa forums SAY you can load the SDHC and just drag stuff 2gb at a time to the card, IN the Sansa. But the 'puter won't show you all the contents at one time.

So how you delete is beyond me?

You can delete from within Rockbox.  See the manual for details.

To use an SDHC card, you can copy stuff to the internal storage, then use Rockbox to copy to the card.  However, using a card reader is much recommended.

I want to be clear about using Micro SDHC cards with Rockbox on a Sansa e260.
This is what I understand to be possible:
I can use a  Micro SDHC card with Rockbox software if I install the files through a card reader not the USB connection.
The Rockbox software will see the files in the SDHC card.

If this is true is there a limit to how big the SDHC card can be?
Thanks

The specification for microSDHC caps the capacity at 64GB.  I expect Rockbox to support every capacity of microSDHC -- there haven't been any reported exceptions to this.

Great info here I wanted to know how large I could go.. I ended up getting 4GB microSDHC instead dirt cheap they like the 2GB MicroSD came with a SD adapter. But it was a good idea when I got the SanDISK  MicroMate as I can now just attach Sansa with RockBox and the MicroSDHC adapter to using a freeware program called Teracopy (uses 256KB of your RAM to speed up transfers).

http://www.maxihall.com/images/isimages/DHSDSDQ4096A11M.jpg this links shows you want I am talking about. The price is way to high. I only paid $6.99 + shipping for 4GB microSDHC with the SD adapter an another $11 bucks with shipping for  SanDisk MicroMate reader/writer.

So let's get this right so 8GB can be used, then a 16GB microSDHC, or 32GB microSDHC and (64GB MicroSDHC when it's made available) wow this is wonderful. But are you limited to SanDisk brand with true

Yes, larger cards can be used.
No, you aren't limited to SanDisk brand cards.
