firmware upgrade woes

Mods please move or delete as necessary:

I'm trying to upgrade my firmware, the Sana one, without blowing away the bootloader for rockbox.  everytime I do this, I end up with the newest build of rockbox but the initial firmware for player.

Why do I need this?  Well it appears that rockbox doesn't work with the transdock micro and I'd like to listen to my sansa in my car.

If anyone knows a way to 1) make rockbox with with a transdock or 2) how to upgrade the oem firmware without having to reinstall rockbox, that would be appreciated.

Chronon:
Run sansapatcher --help.  You will see options to read out the firmware as well as to update the original firmware.

Will that work with the 200r version as well?

EDIT: all i got was -

Usage: e200rpatcher [options]

I assume you're following these instructions:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaE200RInstallationFromWindows

Are you substituting your newer firmware file (.mi4) for the OF.mi4 in those instructions?

I'm using linux.  I tried substituting the newest firmware and then i had no rockbox bootloader. I reinstalled the bootloader and then I had the old firmware.  Not sure what I am doing wrong.  Would a log help?
