Compiled plugins will not run
« on: September 05, 2008, 08:44:32 AM »
Hello, I'm experiencing a few slight problems when trying to compile RB.

I am using windows XP, and am compiling through the VMWare image from the wiki. I successfully compiled RB but it took over an hour, no exaggeration(I guess there's not much I can do about this though, 1.6ghz cpu =[).

The real problem is, after i have compiled RB, I run it through the simulator, and it starts up fine. But when i go to run one of the rocks, it gives me an error message saying something about it being an "invalid image". Its really quite obscure.

I followed the guides in the wiki step by step. =[

I hope there is an easy fix for this, so I can go back to writing my plugin  :D

-Thanks in advance

If I'm not mistaken, you'll need to compile a simulator build to test on the simulator.  When you build it asks whether you want (N)ormal, (S)imulator, etc.

Compiling rockbox only takes a couple minutes on my 2GHz system.

That's correct, but bear in mind that the simulator you create there will be the Linux version. It will not work on your host Windows system.

I've compiled on a 1.66Ghz system, and it takes between 3-7 minutes per compile for me.

As they've pointed out, a simulator is a full "build" of Rockbox, compiled for the computer. It'll include its own plugins, but these plugins won't work on the player and player plugins won't work in the simulator.

Check if you have a virus scanner installed that keeps scanning the virtual disc image -- at least on cygwin virus scanners can immensely decrease the performance.

As for your problem executing the plugin itself, please try to add more information -- with the ones you already given I have no clue what could be the issue.

Thanks for your replies, I shall try the Simulator build option. Also, I discovered the cause of the extreme build lag: I was building from a shared directory on my host system (which is NTFS) ^^"

Also, after I have built with the simulator option, can i just type "make zip"; copy the files over to my host system and run it with the w32 version of the simulator I downloaded from a link in the wiki?

No - this won't work.

Compiling on Windows with Cygwin makes a simulator with working plugins. You can even take the compiled binary and run it on another Windows PC without Cygwin (so long as you copy sdl.dll with it), making it handy as a portable media-player app. ;)

Aha! I got it working at long last, and am now witting my plugin. ^_^

Being a windows user, I was typing "rockboxui", which did nothing. But i re-read the wiki and realised i was supposed to be using "./rockboxui".

Thank your everybody for your help.
